Fate and Free Will:
Writing Your Story Within the Stars
In the grand play of life, we often find ourselves pondering:
- Why do some people seem to be born lucky while others struggle?
- Do we really have control over our lives, or is everything already written?
- If our fate is sealed, what’s the point of effort?
Vedic astrology offers profound insight into these eternal questions. Rooted in the ancient Vedic texts, this system doesn’t just forecast events—it reveals the karmic blueprint behind them. Your horoscope isn’t a random chart of stars; it’s the cosmic reflection of your accumulated karma, crystallized into a form that guides the unfolding of your current life.
🔱 Karma: The Law of Cause and Effect Across Lifetimes
The concept of karma in the Vedic tradition isn’t limited to a single lifetime. Every action, thought, intention, and decision creates an impression—called a samskara—on the soul. These impressions travel with us beyond this life and form the basis of our future experiences.
Just like a bank account accumulates deposits and withdrawals, our karmic account stores merits and demerits over countless incarnations. Whereas an equal positive and negative transaction in a bank would settle to 0, in karmic law positive and negative karma will not cancel each other out.
From this cosmic storehouse, different types of karma shape our life circumstances:
🔸 1. Sanchita Karma – The Accumulated Karma
Sanchita means “collected” or “stored.” This refers to the total karmic baggage from all previous lives. Imagine a massive cosmic storage vault containing the consequences of every action you’ve ever taken—good, bad, and mixed. This karma is not all activated at once, as that would be overwhelming. Only a portion is selected to shape the current incarnation.
🔸 2. Prārabdha Karma – The Karma You’re Experiencing Now
Prārabdha is the activated portion of Sanchita karma, chosen to be played out in this life. It governs:
- Your birth circumstances (family, country, body)
- Major life themes (health, wealth, success, struggles)
- Key relationships
- Turning points and destiny-altering events
This karma cannot be avoided, just as an arrow released from a bow must complete its course. Your natal chart, cast at the moment of birth is a snapshot of your Prārabdha karma.
🔸 3. Kriyamāṇa Karma – The Karma You’re Creating Now
This is the karma of the present moment—your free will in action. Every choice you make, every word you speak, every thought you cultivate is shaping the future. This is your field of power.
While Prārabdha sets the stage, Kriyamāṇa karma is how you play your role.
This karma can counterbalance or soften aspects of your Prārabdha karma through effort, intention, and spiritual practice.
🔸 4. Āgāmi Karma – The Karma of the Future
Āgāmi is the karma being generated now that will bear fruit later—either in this life or in a future incarnation. For example:
- A person who gives generously today may experience wealth or support in a future lifetime.
- Someone who manipulates others may face distrust or betrayal later.
This future karma becomes part of your Sanchita karma, from which future Prārabdha is drawn.
🧭 How Much Is Free Will? And How Much Is Destiny?
Vedic astrology teaches that life is not entirely pre-determined, but neither is it completely within our control. The truth lies in balance.
“You have freedom within the framework of your destiny.”
“You are neither a puppet nor completely free—but a soul navigating consequences with conscious choice.”
Imagine yourself swimming in a river, karma will set the banks of the river, yet you have free will to swim however you wish within those boundaries.
💸 Real-Life Example: Why Some Get Rich Effortlessly, Others Struggle
Have you ever wondered why one person suddenly inherits wealth, meets the right investor, or rides a wave of fortune—while another works tirelessly and stays stuck?
The difference often lies in Prārabdha karma.
The one who receives sudden wealth may be reaping past-life merit (punya), now manifesting as financial blessings. The one struggling may be working off past karmic debts, despite present effort.
This isn’t unfair —it’s cause and effect across lifetimes. The wise response? Don’t compare. Instead, focus on creating uplifting Kriyamāṇa karma now. Remember whilst it may appear unfair in our narrow view of the world, the soul has lived for eternity and time nor distance have any relevance to the divine. You current physical manifestation is simply a fleeting moment in the timeline of your soul.
🧠 When Destiny Knocks Twice:
Bill Gates’ Wealth, Yogas & Destiny Fulfilled
The story of Bill Gates offers a compelling example of how karmic patterns unfold through destiny and timing. Gates’ horoscope contains a rare and potent Lakshmi Yoga, a planetary combination that signifies prosperity, fortune, and the blessings of past-life merit. In his chart, this yoga forms through the union of strong auspicious 5th and 9th lords — Venus and Saturn — with Saturn exalted. This alignment indicates not only the potential for great wealth but also the karma to receive it in this life.
Timing, as always in Jyotish, is key.
When IBM first approached Gates in 1980 about developing an operating system for their upcoming personal computer, he was running the Ketu/Saturn dasha. Ketu is often associated with detachment and spiritual themes, but in this case, the sub-period of Saturn, exalted in Libra and a key player in his Lakshmi Yoga, activated the material prosperity promised in his chart. Saturn here reflects karmic maturity, discipline, and the long-term payoff of past merit. Even during Ketu’s challenging shadowy influence, Saturn’s strength carried the weight of destiny.
Interestingly, Gates initially declined IBM’s offer, directing them instead to another software company. It was a free-willed decision that could have changed the course of his life — but destiny had other plans. When negotiations with the other firm fell through, IBM came back. The opportunity returned, like karma knocking twice. This time, Gates took the deal, setting in motion the birth of MS-DOS and Microsoft’s meteoric rise.
Between this period and December 1982, Gates entered the Ketu/Mercury dasha. Mercury, the planet of intelligence, communication, commerce, and programming, played a pivotal role during this time. In his chart, Mercury is exceedingly well-placed and conjunct with Mars, enhancing mental agility, technical precision, and quick thinking. This combination infused his intellect with sharp analytical ability and the entrepreneurial drive needed to build and scale a technology company. It was a time where his karmic potential for innovation and strategic decision-making came strongly into play.
Interestingly Mercury also signifies paperwork, and Gates’ Mercury was obviously stronger than that of his counterpart because a contractual blunder by IBM in Gates’ favour left the software rights with Microsoft, meaning that he could sell it to other companies too. I imagine IBM assumed exclusive rights, and made an error in due diligence. Without this blunder, Microsoft could have remained a tiny entity.
Soon after, in December 1982, Gates entered his Venus mahadasha until 2002. Venus, the ruler of his auspicious 5th house and a central figure in the Lakshmi Yoga, brought the full blossoming of wealth, luxury, and business expansion. This was the karmic momentum that carried Microsoft through its most explosive period of growth. Venus, in its own sign, ensured that the prosperity Gates had earned over lifetimes would now manifest fully. The Venus dasha is long and this gives such a well placed planet plenty of time to work it’s magic, which it clearly did.
What makes this story so powerful is the way it shows karma in motion: a destined opportunity arises (IBM), free will initially pushes it away (his referral), but karma ensures it returns. Once the moment arrives again, Gates seizes it — and his personal effort, strategic thinking, and business skills (his Kriyamāṇa karma) amplify the fruits of his Prārabdha.
This is how karma and free will work hand in hand. Destiny brought the opportunity; free will made it flourish. And because of the strength and timing of his chart, that opportunity could not be lost — only delayed.
🕉️ Conclusion: Embrace the Power of Conscious Karma
The message of Vedic astrology is not to surrender to fate, but to rise in awareness. When you understand your karmic blueprint:
- You stop blaming others.
- You stop fearing obstacles.
- You begin to act with clarity, knowing your choices matter.
Karma is not punishment. It’s education for the soul.
You’re not stuck—you’re on a journey. With each breath, you’re writing new lines in the story of your soul.
